Introduction
The Bachelor of Science in Microbiology program is a
four-year BS (Honors) in Microbiology program that is designed to provide the students
with a multidisciplinary approach to studying the microbial world and covered
by a set of general courses (theoretical, practical), core courses
(theoretical, practical & viva-voce), elective courses (theoretical) and
allied courses (internship/projects/field-works/orientations and other related
courses/activities).
To achieve the above objectives, students are exposed to the
core and required courses in Medical microbiology, Essential Microbiology,
Basic Microbiology, Industrial Microbiology, Food Microbiology, Environmental
Microbiology, Mpplied Microbiology, Molecular microbiology, and Microbial
Chemistry, and Microbial Biotechnology. Students are also exposed to courses in
Chemistry, Biochemistry, Statistics, and Environmental Sciences to get enough
background knowledge in basic science and information technology to approach
the chosen field of study rationally. Furthermore, students are exposed to
general courses (English and Computer application) and entrepreneurship
studies, both of which broaden their knowledge, thus enabling them to be
effective and responsive in the global society. The industrial training program
in the fourth year affords the students practical experience in the field. This
helps to prepare the student for a career in Applied Microbiology. A student
must earn at least 140 credits in a Four-Year (eight Semesters) to complete
his/her Bachelor's program. A regular student must complete his/her Allied
courses in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year as per direction of the Department.
At the end of the program, the graduates will possess strong
fundamental concepts and high technical competence and excel as professionals,
scientists, and academicians by providing the highest-quality educational
experiences.

To produce the best human resources in microbiology by
imparting quality education and training to the students. The department is
committed to pursuing excellence and integrity in microbiology education,
contemporary research, and professional practices to ensure the continuous
development of high-quality graduates for working in the prevention, diagnosis,
and control of infections and specific diseases; production of food,
pharmaceutical, and healthcare products; and to contribute in the academia and
allied health care research organization.

microbiology-related industries, healthcare sectors, academia, and research

education through mentoring, hands-on training, and motivation to develop
potential, responsible, knowledgeable microbiology graduates, and skilled

industries, reputed academic institutions (Universities), and research

Objectives of the Department of Microbiology
The BS (Honors) in Microbiology program is focused on biological investigations of microbes. Microbiologists can pursue careers in various fields, such as food, environment, industry, agriculture, public health, pharmaceuticals, resource management, and Academia. The program educational objective of the Department of Microbiology is to produce microbiology graduates with, fundamental solid concepts and high technical competence in microbiological sciences and technology, who will be able to use these tools in the microbiological industries, food, pharmaceutical, chemical, environmental, agricultural and healthcare sectors, and institutes wherever necessary for success. The program objective is to provide quality education and innovative research in microbiology, to equip the students with excellence in fundamental concepts, knowledge, and laboratory/field skills for life sciences, to nourish talents for developing leadership with a spirit of self-confidence and self-reliance, and to prepare them to become responsible contributing citizens of the society for national, and global development.
- To provide manpower that would contribute positively to the different life endeavors where microbiologists are in demand.
- To help students develop skills and be well-equipped to teach lectures and research in universities and research institutes.
- To produce graduates of Microbiology with the competence and dexterity in any of the following areas for self-development: Food Microbiologist, Medical Microbiologist, Environmental Microbiologist, Industrial Microbiologist, Virologist, Mycologist, Consultant microbiologist, etc.
- Prepare students of Microbiology for postgraduate studies covering the different disciplines in Microbiology.
Duration of the Program:
Four years
comprising of 8 semesters (2 semesters/year).
General Admission Requirements:
Students seeking admission to pursue the course for the
degree of Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Microbiology should have passed the
SSC and HSC (Education Board, Madrasha Board, Technical Education Board, or Equivalent
Examinations / Other Educational Institutes) or ‘O’ level and ‘A’ level
examinations in the science group or equivalent degrees. The minimum qualifying
GPA is 2.50 in each of SSC and HSC separately (including additional subjects).
However, if a candidate secures a GPA of 2.00 in either SSC or HSC, the
combined total GPA must be at least 6.00 in the scale of 10.00. A science
background is mandatory, and for the Microbiology program in particular,
candidates must have passed with Biology and Chemistry at the HSC/‘A’ level or
recognized equivalent.
For O-Level and A-Level students, the applicant must have
completed 5 subjects in O-Level and 2 subjects in A-Level, with a minimum B
grade in 4 subjects and a minimum C grade in 3 subjects, all from the science
group. Three-year diploma holders with related technical subjects from
government-approved institutes are also eligible to apply. Foreign students
must have completed 12 years of education and obtained equivalent grades in
equivalent examinations from foreign-recognized institutions, in accordance
with the rules and regulations of the Ministry of Education and Ministry of
Foreign Affairs, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.
Admission is offered on a direct admission basis. Credit transfer options are available for eligible candidates; interested students should contact the Admissions Office for further details.
